So, my friend Beowulf just started a new webcomic. Figured I'd pimp it here.

Evidently, the best way to scare the fucking shit out of a guy is to glomp him.

It seems to work in every single manga and half the webcomics I've read so far. Maybe there's something to this...

I think this proves my point that the emperor has an unusual sense of humor.

I love it!

Well considering said glomper was originally an old man, and an emperor of a galactic nation, and had just threatened to have you put into a reactor core and have the last thing destroyed is your ability to scream in pain.

If said glomper glomped me, and asked me "Do I terrify you", I'd probably wet myself :<

I'm kind of liking how each page has one panel that is detailed shading and the rest are flat. But I admit that may be me.

The layouts feel like they are stabilizing a bit and the reading flow is smoother. I admit though I tend to have a bad habit of boxing everything in so I may be biased.

This is pretty common in Hong Kong comics, especially Tony Wong's stuff. Sure, he's a veteran manhua artist (Read: Lots of mullets, lots of ridiculously tacked-on-weapons, lots of frozen-faced perpetual frowners and lots of fashion victims), but he also has the habit of making a painting of single panels as an attempt to emphasize his character's expressions. It's fascinating, as you say.

Yeah I had to d'aww at this pretty hard too, plus I kinda like M-to-F TG (although this is a bit of a stretch since it's really more an opposite-sex clone but using the same mind) to begin with.

I also have to give the author double props for angling toward a straight relationship using an M-to-F/opposite-sex clone that doesn't weird me out from the start.

>I also have to give the author double props for angling toward a straight relationship using an M-to-F/opposite-sex clone that doesn't weird me out from the start.

Eh, I feel like Beo is cheating a bit by not introducing the character to us before her Male-To-Female switch. Sure, she says she was once an old man, but without seeing it or seeing clear signs of discomfort with occupying a female body (or male body language/speech patterns), the Emperor doesn't feel male.
>> No. 928 ID: af0a81
>>917

Well, just so you know, it wasn't ME that made these plot decision. I'm just the dude that makes the pretty pictures. ;3]

And besides, Cebelius has good reason of the science-ey kind to 'splain this whole hoonery with the Emperor making such a smooth transition from M/F without a bit of a hitch! =3

Taken from the forums (http://beyondtheveilcomic.com/forum/index.php?topic=6.15):

"Each of the main characters in Beyond the Veil has a number of statistics which we keep behind the board, so to speak. One of the more important is one we call an infomorphic rating, and it plays into how well a character can adjust to drastic changes. Originally tracked by the Empire under Nicodemus Aurelius, it was a designator that was carefully tracked in all high ranking Imperial agents. Individuals with ratings that were deemed too low would not be ressurrected or cloned because the psychological shock would have rendered that person unstable, unpredictable, and thus unusable.

Nicodemus had his mind deliberately played with over the course of his three hundred + years reign, and has the highest infomorphic rating in the comic. This essentially makes him (now her) a little bit like Bugs Bunny from the old Merry Melody cartoons. Her personality is incredibly plastic... which ironically also makes her a little unstable, unpredictable... and dangerous."

So its natural that he wouldn't seem "male" to anyone not yet knowing this. Mostly cuz "he" is having too much fun being a her. ;3

I mean hell, if I could spend a day as a chick, I'd probably spend it on a trampoline, just cuz. XD

I was >_____> towards the latest comic until you explained it. It not only makes sense but it also strikes me as an interesting way to handle character development.

However I would find a spot to actually explain how this process makes one's mind unstable because otherwise this latest page is bound to make others who dont come here go "WTF?!"
>> No. 930 ID: 56ad3f
>>928
I've got to say that this explanation helps me suspend a little of my WTFing but as was said in post
>>929
I really hope this gets some in comic explanation because it really seemed from the lead up that Joshua had the emperor cloned-into(?) a female body to further his own agenda and/or weird crush on the emperor. I was rather confused by the crossgender cloned emperor's behavior. It didn't seem to fit in with the obvious fear on the other characters face following the whole "do you love me" question.
>> No. 931 ID: d51f94
>>930
It really caught me off guard because for the first few comics the Emperor actually seemed lucid and coherent. That lead me to believe that the Empreror kissing the large guy was equally coherent and lucid and kind of weird.

If it turns out that she's gone mad it'd make sense.
>> No. 932 ID: 4896e5
>>928

Good job on the pretty pictures! They are indeed quite pretty.

It would definitely help to see more about the mind-altering process in-comic, and especially to see how the Emperor behaved in his other bodies.

Does it come off as strange that the writing here reads like some sort of stage play? I'm getting space opera images.

I was/am sort of waiting for the whole "love me" thing to be a trap, and not in the really packing a wang sense. The emperor was just made out to be so ruthless, death by torture lasting no less than a month, "how long could he survive if put in the generator?" etc.

Seems a bit like a case of artistic self-insertion. That's how Beowulf dresses.

Left to right: Me, don't remember, Beo, don't remember. AC09.
>> No. 1176 ID: 02cd15
>>1175

No offense meant to Beo, but I picked that up from the very first comic that it was mentioned a guy had been transformed into a girl. But y'know, you write about stuff that's important/interesting to you and it hasn't been preachy about it, so I have no complaints.
>> No. 1181 ID: 6434cf
>>1176

I wouldn't say that the guy to girl transformation is self-insertion on Beo's part, especially considering that Beo is not the one writing the comic. The unambiguously gay foxboy wearing Beo's usual red pants, corset, and frilly hat? Yes.

1: he's a golden retriever. Dammit. XD

2: I am of the firm belief that you can dress like a tart and still be straight. Hell, that was the ENTIRE French Golden age, when a man could wear silk, heels, and feathers and still not only kick ass, but never ONCE have his masculinity called into question.

3: I swear, HAND TO GOD, Cebelius thought it would be a good idea to write Ben wearing that outfit as a "Get-out-of-Soldiering Free Card" tactic. Never talked to him once about it beforehand, I don't spin the panel and page concepts, I just draw the pretty pictures. :p

And 4: You homo. You HAD to toss up a pic, didnt you? X3 *pokes face* Lookit that biggass cheesy grin. And you! YOU need to smile moar! XD

Know what that face says? "Hm. Yes. I am standing here." :|

Just for that? Next I see you, I'ma punish you with a hug. ;3
>> No. 1183 ID: af0a81

Well see, this has nothing to do with ME! O.O This isn't my story, Cebelius wrote it, and I can say that though he has a taste for transformation, I'm about 100% certain that the idea of a genderswap to start out the story would at least turn heads. :p

Besides: MOUSIEBOOBS! =D

Well, ratboobz, but... eh. You get me. :3

The wall of text here contains a line that has me doing a bit of head scratching. Pvt Fruity-pants uses the phrase "a crippled dog" but he seems quite intact. So place your bets. My guess is that the instruction to leave the swath of hair in front points to the obscured side of his face being mangled/ missing an eye

So tempting to read that as a gay thing. But it seems to be more about influencing those around him. Though the feline looking character off the collie's left shoulder makes me wonder if the comment doesn't work both ways. (pun sort of intended)
>> No. 2112 ID: 974f40
Ok... Emporor guy turned girl is creepy in the BAD way. Also not *quite* vibing on how easily he accepts being a woman, or how easily his male companion, who follows because he "swore to serve him" is just falling in line with being in love with someone who he's known for who knows how many years (centuries?) as a guy... and a guy who he was only serving out of complete loyalty.

It had a bit of an odd start, got uncomfortable early on, and then just went over *points* THAT way someplace and lost me as far as character motivation.

Did the general guy love the emperor as a man before he ended up in a female body? Or is he just hard up for a female to the point of immediately falling in love with one who, only moments ago, threatened to torture him in a manner most horrible? Is he doing it because he feels obliged to through his loyalty? does he believe love based in honor and service alone is real love? ...I'm not getting it.

As for the Emperor, similar questions come up. Stuck or not... won't it feel a tad weird getting sexed over by someone you see as mainly a servant first, even if you want them to love you? Was he in such a spoiled, "I get what I want when I want it." sort of rulership that he honestly believe commanding someone to love him will make them really love him... or is he just commanding the general to pretend to love him?

It' not making enough sense for me to follow it properly, I'm afraid...

In that bleary half-sane surreal state of being of having been two+ days awake and more overworked than I care to dwell on, I remembered that I had a thread here that I've thus left woefully unattended...

Hopefully the continuation of the story tickles interest. Been having fun gettin' on track with the art style at least.

Pvt. Fruitypants makes me smile too.
>> No. 2386 ID: 5effe2
>>2112 It wouldn't be a problem if this had happen befor, it's the future gender really shouldn't be a problem, kinda like in The Knight of Cydonia (the due who did BLAME!) one of the main character looks female but isn't one because by then gender is starting to be phased out. They could have just went "oh you're female this time"

Now the Emperor can that other dude could have been lovers befor, they known each other for a looong time and it happens.

But no, it comes off as being female is a new thing, and this kinda just comes outof the blue, like just because the Emp turn female is the reason, This is Wotch bullshit

also if they can remake a body and done so other a lot how hard is it to change gender?
>> No. 2464 ID: cc1741
>>2386
Well let's consider this;
It's entirely possible that, given how long they've known each other and how loyal Joshua is, even when the emperor was male they had strong feelings of companionship for each other.
So now that the emperor is female, it may just be seen as the next logical step in their relationship.

>>2383
Also, I'm not too certain I like that shade of purple with that tone of blue.
