That's the simplest set up, and keeps the lineart neat while I mess around with the colour layer.

You can use different layers for colours, especially if you want to experiment with different designs. For example, you might make this guy's shirt one colour, then make another layer to see how it looks in another colour.

Layers: learn them and love them.

You'll want to make the rear foot look slightly larger than the front foot to show the difference in distance from the viewer.

If in doubt, act it out (as long as you aren't trying to draw a ninja leaping sideways through a window). Try standing in the pose you're drawing to get some idea of where all the bits and pieces are going.

First, I've rotated the pic so she's vertical - otherwise she looks sort of off-balance, which is bad if you're trying to carry a heavy load (on the other hand, trying to carry a wriggling person isn't easy, so maybe the off-balance thing would add some interest to the picture, but I'll keep things simple here).

So let's assume she's trying to stand upright and balance while walking. I've bluelined in her left leg, which should be almost directly behind her; the greenline is her right leg, almost directly in front. I've drawn in the shin and ankle where it overlaps, but obviously you wouldn't be able to see it.

You've got the twist of the hips more or less right, but the shoulders should tilt slightly in the other direction to balance things off.

Lastly, I think the elbows should be a little further down, at her waist. Try carrying a pillow and see where your arms end up (I didn't so I could be wrong).

Okay, hope this helps, keep going!

So I'm working on a followup to my piece "Animal Control" from FA, and it calls for the character to be shown walking, from behind. I have no idea how to do that. I was going for a foreshortening/perspective thing, but it just make her look knock-kneed and unbalanced. Can anyone tell what, exactly, I'm doing wrong?

Thanks,
this comes at a nice time, the next few days i should have some time to continue working on this.

For the feathers i agree stronger shadows are part of what's needed i'm hoping to get a kinda iridescent effect in the end.
The horns are pretty much left from an earlier stage like that.

Shadow and mouth structure are noted, i'll see what i can do about that.

And no, i didn't do the texture by hand, i'll freely admit that i wouldn't have the patience for that. It's an overlay and a screen layer that had stuff erasered out with a texture brush (i think it was from the blur goodbrush set). Just noticed that i didn't mention it but i'm always willing to post .psd and stuff if anyone wants them.

Niiiice scale texture! I'd add more shadows to the feathers and some detail to the horns, and remove the thick black outline around the horns. The shadow looks a bit heavy on the bottom half of its mouth.

The skull structure is generally pretty good, look at how much higher the (our) left eyebrow is from the right to see how much higher the left nostril should be from the right.

The mouth looks a little under-detailed/structured. Some work in the corner or the part right under its nose might make it more suitable..?

Are you hand-rendering those textures? Yum. :9 I wouldn't give this much blah-blah critique if I didn't love what's already there!

Try to get the feel of the object rather than wasting (inevitably) hours on this over-detailed under-structured stuff.
