OK, posting the entirety of what I'm calling "A Life Less Original". 67 total edits, lots of rewriting. Not every page is here, and please don't point out spelling and grammar errors--it's a rush job.

Side note: I gave Red an unidentifiable Irish/Scottish accent to tie to the name and make her more interesting. Vic's dad is a Brooklyner.

Testing the Xchan Directory Dumper; cross your fingers.

Enjoy!

Wow. WOW. Nothing like some random guy on the internet to show you what a shit writer Naylor is. It's always been his weakest point, and this just demonstrates exactly how weak.

Gotta say, though, that without the awful dialogue and moronic characterization... I dunno... the comic becomes far less interesting. It's pretty unremarkable in this form, whereas it stood out as being almost unbearably bad in its original form.

Still, though. Interesting idea, and even though the comic itself isn't very notable, it's still very interesting to hold up in comparison to Naylor's original work.

This is what a second draft looks like. You should start writing one.
>> No. 16763 ID: 0ce199
Okay, the fact that you just went through and improved nearly all Naylor's works, in a few days, is a testament to how fucking SAD a writer he was! Holy shit, these are way more coherent and sane than their originals were. Even working within the boundaries of what he drew before these are all marked improvements.

We need to get you and the guy who does the backgrounds together for like a long weekend, redo the whole thing, and make Naylor weep like a little bitch with a skinned knee when he sees how little effort it takes to make his great creation actually something of quality.
>> No. 16766 ID: 48a908
>>16728

That's a problem with slice of life: it's really really boring unless you have interesting characters and situations. When I take the retardation and inconsistencies out, it's very apparent how bad the plotting really is--I can't even work plot build up because elements fall away too fast. I did my best.

>>16761

I have no idea who or what this is. For the record, the rhyme was accidental but it worked.

>>16763

It's something I considered, but I dunno. I hammered these out in about 8 hours of solid re-writes and I'd much rather not see these pages again for a while.

But man, repairing some of his shit dialogue was weirdly fun.

>I have no idea who or what this is. For the record, the rhyme was accidental but it worked.

Heh. It's an Opie & Anthony reference. Maxwell was some loser radio guy in Cleveland trashing them, and when they hit back, pretty much the only thing he could do was keep saying "DO THE BIT" with what he thought was an impression of O&A. They use the "DO THE BIT" sound clip now, among other clips, when someone says something hacky, or a joke bombs.

Figured no one would get it, but I like the show, and couldn't help myself :P
>> No. 16771 ID: 48a908
Oh, while I'm thinking about it, I figured out an important plot point while I was at this: who wrote the love letter.

Joe that was awsome. You just proved how much of a shot writer Naylor is and you took something blagh and incoreherrent and turned it into something where the reader actually looks forward to reading the next installment.
I applaud your efforts dude and I think that I will look forward to any edits you might do in the future.

Wow, this is a great improvement over the originals. No real soapboxing, dialogue that you could actually imagine people saying, and it even got a few laughs out of me.

I spotted a couple grammatical errors, but other than that, great stuff!

I have, yeah. Bear in mind, it's far easier to revise someone else's dialogue than to write your own.

Oh, we're sure he reads this board. I have no doubt he'll read this thread if he hasn't already. Will he admit it? Only if he tries to get this removed for some reason.

I wish him the best of luck in that. Maybe he should start with someone easier, like curing cancer with some poop and a Double Mint wrapper.
>> No. 16783 ID: c13243
Joe, dude, what you're doing here is appreciated. Not only are you making OL bearable to rad, but you are also showing what should be done in a webcomic. Even if the pacing is wonky (for obvious reasons) you're doing pretty good work.

ok i'll give a bit of honest critisizm. Most of your rewrites i prefered to the originals, but there were some where i felt jay's were better, not everything he does is broken (at least in terms of dialog). The whole cooties story probably didn't need to be touched, but i really liked you putting reason behind why abigal was a nurse.

the sport dad's accent made the dialog a bit hard to read, something i'd stick away from in the future or go for an easier accent to do like Red's.

something i noticed you did in several of the pages was mentioning things to happen in the next page ex: fisk mentioning jessica and robert for baby sitting.

so keep up the good work

Oh my god...
This is just...
So good.
It's... Can you rewrite EVERY strip? They're just so much better than the 'originals'!
Honestly, you bring character depth, some light plot and you filled in the stupidity with some light hearted family nonsense (the good kind)
Seriously.
Thank you.

Wow D: It was so much better than the original.

Awesome work dude! :D! Keep it up~

OP is right - the comic is a lot less intersting when you take all the stupid out of it.

i guess if OP did the same treatment to Better Days it might work a lot better, the 'plot' being at least consistent enough to allow for a proper story to be re-writen into it.

still, good work.

Some strips I just can't improve for various reasons, like #103--the art says something, and all I could possibly do is rephrase what Liz is saying. Rewriting Better Days is largely out of the question, as it's over 600 pages and usually better than Original Life.

>>ok i'll give a bit of honest critisizm. Most of your rewrites i prefered to the originals, but there were some where i felt jay's were better, not everything he does is broken (at least in terms of dialog). The whole cooties story probably didn't need to be touched, but i really liked you putting reason behind why abigal was a nurse.

I thought--and this is personal opinion--that the idea "cooties" was just kind of dumb, even for a kid like Thomas, and the term got thrown around as something amazingly dangerous to a ludicrous degree. Reworking it like something from a bad action show felt less clumsy, but that's me. I liked reworking Fang, too, who's supposed to sound Creole (yes, in Georgia, gimme some rome here) to make him a bit more sympathetic.

Opinions are going to vary on what should and shouldn't be edited, and I have no expectations of pleasing everyone. :D I'll happily admit that some of his work is at the very least acceptable. I don't intend to always do every page going forward, either.

And yeah, rationalizing the nurse's get-up was fun.

I liked it.You mostly made what is considered the story part believing.
Notably you manage to carry the same message without walls of text.(The best exemple for me is >>16707, you use 30 less words than http://www.jaynaylor.com/originallife/archives/2009/09/028.html and make Janie looks normal while still giving her a reason to do a volley match.)
But yeah, the end result is pretty boring, but that's because story wise not much happened between the rants. And Naylor can't finish an arc before setting two others.
(As for Charlie and the love letter, I figured it a while back too.But given how Naylor like lesbians, and since I actually like Charlie, I'd prefer that he doesn't touch that arc...)

At this point I became convinced you should become Failor's writer. It's not homophobic, anti-semetic, or racist at all! And the story makes sense! My god, you made Failor's work GOOD!

>That's a problem with slice of life: it's really really boring unless you have interesting characters and situations. When I take the retardation and inconsistencies out, it's very apparent how bad the plotting really is--I can't even work plot build up because elements fall away too fast. I did my best.

You did, its more like we need to add more pages

hell we can make our own webcomic uses the same plots and characters, it would be 1000 times better and any jay made

agreed, her response to janie about the two peice swimsuit was MUCH better than naylor's 'i'm smarter and more awesome than other mothers' dialog.

Ya see, this is what happens when you focus more on the story and less one yourself. All Fisk ever writes about is his personal ideology and in honest truth, the worst atheist and racists are just as bad as the worst church goers. You will always find fanatics, as well those of faith that perhaps can't expand themselves outside of the box.
Its less about right or wrong, as it is about personal pride imo. There is just no room for the possibility, that it merely comes down to a acceptance of faith. Regardless of faith, if you have faith or if you don't. Need there be any further discussion =P
