Well, there are a few theories out there in the scientific community, but the one that makes the most sense (and was told to me by an aborigine himself) was that, at least in his group: It's a way of saying whether you are "with someone" (married) or not. If you stand on the left leg, it means you are with someone. If you are standing on the right leg, and you are a male, you are "single and looking," and for the females, the left leg.
