Isaac Clarke I think belongs here. He's badass because he's *not* badass, like in that Ellen Ripley in Alien sense.

Well, I thought it was cool, badass in the sense he's named after two science fiction legends and wields a plasma cutter.

Would Arthur C. Asimov be better?

While it's speculative at this point, the direction they're taking with the game can point you towards the conclusion: http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/106/1067171p1.html

I'm still hopeful because of how much I loved Dead Space, but I'm skeptical of their ability to not fuck it up for the sequel.

I'm not going to throw the game under the bus just yet, at least not until gameplay videos start coming out, but there's definitely worry there.

Resident Evil 4 changed the series from survival horror to survival action horror and it was amazing. Will it be as good as the originals were? Of course not but it revived a dying series

Terminator 1 was pretty much more a sci-fi horror than an action movie, and Terminator 2 was less serious, action packed, and quite possibly one of the best sequels ever made.

Alien was a slasher movie in space, and scary as hell. Aliens took it in an almost completely different direction and it was FANTASTIC.

Everyone seems to be getting their panties in a twist that DS 2 is going to be more action oriented, would it be better to just make the same game twice? I for one am looking forward to Dead Space 2 and it's changes, and reserve judgment for when it actually comes out.

oh and to those bitching about him talking in the next game, all that means is that he'll actually be a CHARACTER and not just a robot you pilot for the duration of the game.
>> No. 570 ID: c2d14e
>>555, yes, I admit, Resident Evil 4 did bring new breath to the series, but that was a welcome change because the Resident Evil series has been around forever, and was in dire need of a change. And that aside, you didn't play RE4 for the same reason you played Dead Space. You played RE4 to be a badass killing parasite-infested Spaniards and saving the President's awkwardly attractive daughter.

You played Dead Space to get the shit scared out of you. And, try as hard as they may, when you feel like you can take on everything in your way, you lose that experience. It's kind of the same reason people didn't like Silent Hill Homecoming. It's not a Horror game anymore. It's an action game with zombies.

As for him talking, I'll be slightly more fine with him if he's realistic, but I'll still be disappointed. When the only thing you heard out of Issac were grunts and yelps of pain, it kind of helped the horror feel of the game. This is a guy is scared shitless, just like you would be in the situation.

All in all, I don't think the game will be bad. The reason I'm so disappointed is that it'll be another drop in the massive bucket of Third-Person shooters, when the first one was such a massive conquest for the horror genre.

This all reminds me of Ash's transformation from near-nerd to one-liner-spouting badass through the Evil Dead series.
Also, there is no more a badass name than Ashley. Pic related.

I see what you mean but i still disagree. the fact that it's gonna be more action oriented doesn't necessarily mean that nothing is a challenge, in fact thinking that you're ready for anything can make it all the more surprising/horrifying when you find out you're no where NEAR ready for what you face.

I don't mean to beat a dead horse even further but Aliens is pretty much the prime example of what I mean.

You have alien, slasher film in space, incredibly slow paced and terrifying. The survivors have to scrounge together whatever they can in order to fend off this unknown alien and absolutely horrifying creature. One person survives and is changed forever

Now Aliens. The survivor from the first movie now accompanies a "Fully Equiped" group of marines into a full fledged alien nest. They think they're ready, and they aren't at all worried, all except the survivor pleading them to prepare more/actually take this unknown threat seriously. They go in, guns at the ready, and get fucking MASSACRED. All except for a small remaining group including the survivor. Horror and suspense are created and exists symbiotically with action and one liners.

tl;dr just because it'll be more action packed doesn't mean it won't scare you.

And on the topic of scaring, Dead Space had a lot of "HOLY SHIT WHAT WAS THAT" quick scares, but wasn't (at least to me) all that scary.

Alright, his name may not be as unbelievably..."man-tacular" as Max Payne or Lord Ulyoath the Unholy Divine Relic, or some other title equally hammy and unpronounceable, but at least it is believably baddass.

It sounds kinda foreign, kinda Slavic...and we all know that the Russians are baddass (in games anyway).
Anyway, he can't feel pain. How many other "badass" characters can make that claim?

Meh. I got nothing against the game but it's just that the plot is so damn simple and obvious. The first one pretty good it's just that the 2nd, 3rd, and RTS installments follow the same damn plot.

1. You're some cyborg supersoldier badass.
2. you're at war with aliens.
3. land on an ancient structure and release a parasite /infection.
3. Fight off aliens, zombies, alien zombies, whatever
4. Blow the shit out of whatever you're on and escape

Congratulations you just saved the fucking universe

Now repeat this in other installments with better graphics, engines, gameplay, etc.

As much as I love the Halo 'verse, I got to agree with you. I wish the series did a LOT more with the whole first contact thing. Elites and Humans seemed to ally together, then Elites seemed to completely dissapear. It would have been nice to explore some of the implications of Humans allying themselves with a non-human race, have it have SOME sort of impact on their society.

This is about discussion of the characters and their names, not the games. That being said, Master Chief isn't his name as "John" is intentionally bland but still bland.

To add to the discussion, Gordon Freeman. You can debate "Gordon" but anyone named Freeman that's going up against a tyrannical, planet-conquering interdimensional regime has a badass lame.
>> No. 821 ID: 462ba3
>>810
Terrible? I think not, great gameplay and a great/decent story make it a good game.
>>783
Eh I'll give ya that, the plot really isn't that complicated. But I could break down almost any game and it's sequels the same way you just did.(like to say half-life) In fact there was a whole thread dedicated to that in /currant/

>>811
That's honestly my biggest problem with Halo in general. So many goddamn fucking retarded fans making a bad name for the rest of us.
>>785
True. I understand the main reason was because because the whole brute/elite civil war didn't happen until the end of 2 but that doesn't explain them only being in cut scenes in 3 and almost no where else.
